About Us
About Us
The Ealing & Hanwell Allotment Association was founded in the Boston Manor area in 1917 and has been operating from its headquarters at the Searchlight Station, Haslemere Avenue since 1924. The association’s original objectives were the permanent retention of allotments, the laying on of water, co-operative trading and to arrange for the instruction of horticultural skills, as well as lectures, discussions, exhibitions and an annual horticultural show.
The association is a not-for-profit membership organisation, run by a committee consisting of a Chair, Treasurer, Secretary and other posts, which are elected by the membership at an AGM. The association runs two huts to provide gardening advice and sell horticultural items on a cooperative basis to its members. The main hut is located at the Searchlight Station, with a satellite hut situated at the Ascott Allotments site in South Ealing and serviced by the Searchlight Station.
The association’s newly elected committee wants to add greater social value to the local community by making gardening and allotmenteering available to all, improving biodiversity and increasing volunteering opportunities. We see the Searchlight site as an asset for the local community to use and engage with on a variety of levels. To find out more about our vision, mission and objectives, please take a look at our mission statement below.
Committee
President
I have been on the Committee for 3 years but I have helped out at the Searchlight Trading Hut for 14 years. I have had an allotment at the Haslemere site for over 25 years and I have used the services of the trading hut all that time.
I am also a Chair of the Haslemere Allotment Committee
Vice-President
Treasurer
Secretary
An Association member since the 1990s and on the committee for a year. I am interested in allotments and gardening. I have half a plot next to my husband’s and am jointly responsible for my husband’s plot. We have small front and back gardens which we maintain with flowers. I love growing organically and trying different methods of cultivation. We enjoy the food we grow.
My current role is as the Secretary for the Association
Annual Show Secretary & Membership Secretary
I first joined the Committee in 2010 and have been Show Secretary since 2016 and am passionate about making the Annual Show a success! I also maintain the membership list for the Association and am really happy to see so many new members have joined since the resurrection of the Searchlight site! I have recently taken over the design and upkeep of our website.
Although I no longer have an allotment I still enjoy growing in my garden at home in South Ealing which I share with my 9 cats and 1 dog!
Trading Hut Secretary
I recently joined the committee but I have used the Trading Hut for a number years. My wife and I have had an allotment for 17 years (Haslemere site and I am the Treasurer on their committee). We both enjoy gardening and trying to grow vegetables, sometimes succeeding!
Now I am retired I hope to improve the quality of produce from my plot. Currently I am helping with the website and the Trading Hut at Searchlight

As someone who lives nearby, I was a customer and member of the Searchlight Trading Hut before I started gardening in my allotment at Haslemere. I find companion planting fascinating, and I like to grow fruit, vegetables, and mainly edible flowers that benefit from each other. When planted together in the right combination, plants can provide shade or stability, reduce pests, attract pollinators, or boost growth.
I also aim to be a helpful companion within this committee that I recently joined.
